A NIE number is the identification number that Spain assigns to foreign nationals. You need one for almost every official transaction in Spain, from buying property to opening a bank account. If you are planning anything involving Spanish bureaucracy, this is where it starts.

Despite being essential, the NIE number is often misunderstood. Many people confuse it with residency, or assume it is only for people moving to Spain permanently. Neither is true. This guide answers the most common questions clearly and honestly.

What does NIE stand for?

NIE stands for Numero de Identificacion de Extranjero, which translates as „Foreigner Identification Number.” It is issued by the Spanish National Police (Policia Nacional) and serves as your unique tax and administrative reference number in Spain.

Think of it as the Spanish equivalent of a national insurance number, social security number, or tax file number depending on where you are from. It does not grant you any right to live or work in Spain on its own. It simply identifies you in the Spanish system.

ℹ️ Important distinction: A NIE number is not the same as a residency certificate (TIE). You can hold a NIE number without being a resident of Spain. Many non-residents obtain a NIE purely to complete a property purchase or other one-off transaction.

What does a NIE number look like?

A NIE number always follows the same format: one letter, seven digits, and one final letter. It is nine characters in total.

The first letter is X, Y, or Z depending on when it was issued. The final letter is a control character calculated from the digits.

Your NIE number is printed on a white certificate called the Resolucion de Concesion de NIE. This is the official document you will receive. It contains your full name, nationality, date of birth, and the NIE number itself.

Once issued, your NIE number never changes. It is yours permanently, regardless of how much time you spend in Spain or whether your circumstances change.

Who needs a NIE number?

Any foreign national who needs to complete an official transaction in Spain will require a NIE number. You do not need to be a resident or an EU citizen. Common reasons include:

Buying property
Required at the notary before any property purchase can complete.
Opening a bank account
Spanish banks require a NIE to open any personal or business account.
Starting a job
Your employer needs your NIE to register you with Spanish social security.
Buying a car
Required to register a vehicle in Spain in your name.
Starting a business
You need a NIE to register as self-employed or set up a Spanish company.
Accessing healthcare
Required to register with the Spanish public health system.
⚠️ Property buyers: Your notary will ask for your NIE at the signing appointment. Without it, the transaction cannot proceed. This is the most common reason people need a NIE urgently.

Does a NIE number expire?

No. Your NIE number itself never expires. Once assigned, the number is yours for life. However, the certificate document that proves your NIE number was historically valid for only three months. Some Spanish institutions (particularly notaries and banks) may ask for a recently issued certificate.

1
NIE number, yours for life
The number never changes and never expires. It follows you regardless of how many times you visit Spain or how your situation changes.

If you already have a NIE number but cannot find your certificate, you can request a duplicate through the Spanish authorities. NIE Number Fast can help with this process as well.

NIE vs TIE vs NIF: what is the difference?

TermFull nameWhat it isWho has one
NIENumero de Identificacion de ExtranjeroTax and admin ID for foreignersAny foreign national doing business in Spain
TIETarjeta de Identidad de ExtranjeroPhysical residency card (contains NIE)Foreign nationals living in Spain long-term
NIFNumero de Identificacion FiscalTax identification numberSpanish citizens

In short: if you are a foreign national, you need a NIE. If you then move to Spain and become a resident, you will eventually also get a TIE card, which will show your NIE number on it. They are related but different documents.
