Many people living in or moving to Spain eventually ask: do I need to renew my NIE number? It is a logical question — but the answer is almost always no. Your NIE number is a unique identification number assigned to you once. It does not expire and does not need to be renewed. Ever.

The confusion arises because certain documents linked to your NIE — such as your TIE card or residency certificate — can expire. When those expire, people assume their NIE number has expired too. That is not the case.

The short answer: Your NIE number is permanent and never expires. What may need updating are the documents that contain or reference your NIE — not the number itself.

In this guide we explain the difference, walk through the situations where you do need to take action, and show you how to handle each one.

What is the difference between a NIE number and NIE documents?

WhatExpires?What it is
NIE numberNeverYour permanent Spanish ID number (e.g. X1234567A)
NIE certificateNo — but can become outdatedThe paper document issued when you first got your NIE
TIE card (non-EU)Yes — every 1–5 yearsBiometric residency card for non-EU nationals living in Spain
EU residency certificateNoGreen A4 document issued to EU citizens living in Spain

In short: the number stays. The documents around it may need attention depending on your situation.

When do you actually need to take action?

Even though your NIE number never expires, there are four situations where you will need to do something.

Situation 1
Your TIE card is expiring (non-EU citizens)
TIE cards expire and must be renewed. Your NIE number stays the same — you just get a new card.
Situation 2
You lost your NIE certificate
You can request a duplicate. The number does not change — you just need a new copy of the document.
Situation 3
Your residency status changed
If you moved from non-resident to resident, you need a residency certificate or TIE — not a new NIE number.
Situation 4
You don’t have a NIE yet
If you’ve never applied, this is a first-time application — not a renewal. NIE Number Fast handles this fully remotely.

Situation 1 — Renewing your TIE card (non-EU citizens)

If you are a non-EU citizen living in Spain, your TIE card (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) has an expiry date printed on it. This card must be renewed before it expires.

Important: renewing your TIE card does not mean applying for a new NIE number. Your NIE number remains exactly the same — you are simply getting an updated card that contains the same number.

TIE renewal — key facts
When to applyUp to 60 days before expiry date
Government fee∼€16 (Tasa 790)
Where to applyExtranjería office or through a representative
NIE number changes? No — stays the same
Do not wait until it expires. Staying in Spain with an expired TIE card can result in fines and complications when dealing with banks, employers, or notaries. Apply for renewal at least one month before the expiry date.

Situation 2 — You lost your NIE certificate

Losing your NIE certificate (the white A4 paper document) is more common than you might think. The good news: your NIE number still exists in the Spanish government system. You just need a new copy of the certificate.

To get a replacement, you essentially go through the same process as an original NIE application — submitting the EX-15 form and the required documents. The result is a new certificate with the same NIE number you already have.

1
Complete form EX-15

This is the standard NIE application form, also used for replacement certificates. Download it from the official Spanish government website.

2
Pay the Tasa 790 government fee

This is under €12 and can be paid at most Spanish banks. Keep your payment receipt — you will need it at the appointment.

3
Book an appointment at the Policía Nacional or Extranjería

In major cities, appointment slots can be limited. Book as early as possible via the official government booking system.

4
Attend and submit your documents

Bring your passport, a passport-size photo, the completed EX-15 form, and your Tasa 790 receipt. You receive your certificate the same day if everything is correct.

Situation 3 — Your residency status changed

This is one of the most common sources of confusion. If you moved from being a non-resident to a resident, your NIE number stays exactly the same — but you may need a different type of document.

Your situationWhat you needNIE changes?
Non-resident (EU citizen)NIE certificate (EX-15)No
Resident (EU citizen)EU residency certificateNo
Non-resident (non-EU)NIE certificate (EX-15)No
Resident (non-EU)TIE card (biometric residency card)No

In every case, your NIE number is the same. The type of document you hold changes based on your residency status — not the number itself.

Situation 4 — You don't have a NIE number yet

If you have never held a NIE number, or you are applying for the first time, this is not a renewal — it is a first-time application. NIE Number Fast handles this fully remotely for EU and non-EU citizens.

The most common mistakes

Most problems with NIE “renewal” come from misunderstanding how the system works. Here are the mistakes we see most often:

Trying to renew a valid NIE number
Your NIE number does not expire. There is nothing to renew. Booking an appointment to “renew your NIE” is unnecessary.
Confusing NIE with TIE
Your TIE card (for non-EU residents) expires. Your NIE number does not. Renewing your TIE card is not the same as getting a new NIE.
Delaying because of wrong assumptions
Some people delay property purchases or job starts because they think their NIE expired. In almost all cases, the number is still valid.
Letting your TIE card expire
Unlike the NIE number, your TIE card has a real expiry date. Missing it can cause complications with banks, employers, and official processes.

Frequently asked questions

No. A NIE number is permanent and never expires. Once assigned, it is yours for life — regardless of how long you stay in Spain or how your circumstances change.
The NIE certificate itself does not have a legal expiry date. However, if your personal details have changed, some institutions may ask for an updated certificate. In practice, most banks and notaries accept an older certificate as long as the NIE number matches your passport.
No. Renewing your TIE card does not change your NIE number. You simply apply for a new card — the NIE number printed on it stays the same. Submit the renewal application up to 60 days before the expiry date.
You can apply for a replacement using form EX-15 — the same form used for an original NIE application. Your number stays the same. You will need to book an appointment at the Policía Nacional or Extranjería office, or use NIE Number Fast to handle it remotely.
Yes. NIE Number Fast offers assistance with TIE card renewals through our additional services. Contact us directly to discuss your specific situation and we will guide you through the process.
No. Your NIE number stays the same when you become a resident. What changes is the type of document you hold: EU citizens receive a residency certificate, while non-EU citizens receive a TIE card. In both cases, the NIE number is the same one you have always had.
For a first-time NIE application you typically need: a valid passport, a completed EX-15 form, proof of the reason for needing a NIE (property purchase, employment contract, or similar), and payment of the Tasa 790 government fee (under €12). If applying through NIE Number Fast, we handle all document preparation as part of the service.
EU citizens can receive their NIE in as little as 5 working days on the Ultra Priority plan, or within 2–4 weeks on the Standard plan. Non-EU citizens typically take 15–30 working days depending on the plan chosen.
